According to a royal reporter, Prince William once dreamed of a very different career path when he was a child.

As a little boy Prince William wanted to become a policeman. A royal insider has revealed that he once told Princess Diana about this plan and told her that as a police officer he would be able to protect her.

Royal author Robert Jobson revealed this sweet anecdote in his book, William’s Princess, published in 2006.

“His mother leaned heavily on her eldest son in her times of need – times when William was still just a little boy," said the author. “He also had a natural knack of spotting what Princess Diana needed."

“Whenever Diana felt uncertain, William was there for her." The author revealed, “He once told her he wanted to be a policeman so he could protect her. Her heart must have ached with love at his earnest words.”

This story has been confirmed by other royal sources who were also told about Prince William's naive ambitions.

Andrew Morton once wrote about a similar conversation between Prince Harry, Prince William, and their mother, in his book about the late Princess Diana.

“William and Harry were aware of their destiny," wrote Andrew. “On one occasion the boys were discussing their futures with Diana. 'When I grow up I want to be a policeman and look after you Mummy,' said William. Quick as a flash, Harry replied, with a note of triumph in his voice, 'Oh no you can't, you've got to be king'."

This sweet story is bittersweet for a variety of reasons. The young brothers were once so close as children but now reports suggest that Prince William and Prince Harry have ‘no immediate possibility of any reconciliation' as it isn’t ‘wanted on either side.’

It's also evident from this story that although Prince William understood his place in the royal line of succession as heir to the throne, as a child he still had naive hopes of a different career path.

This story is also heartwrenching as Princess Diana died in 1997 when Prince William was just 15 years old. Meaning that even if the Prince had become a police officer as an adult, he would not have been able to protect his mother who died in a car accident in Paris.
