Gatcombe Park—take a look at the countryside estate Zara and Mike Tindall share with Princess Anne

Gatcombe Park is arguably one of the lesser known royal residences in the monarchy's property portfolio, but it's actually the home of some of the Queen's nearest and dearest relatives—including Princess Anne and Zara and Mike Tindall.

With a look at all these gorgeous royal homes, we began to wonder—where do Princess Anne and Mike and Zara Tindall live?

Princess Anne is the only daughter of Her Majesty and Prince Philip and she has taken the title of the hardest-working royal for several years in a row. Despite being the second eldest of Queen Elizabeth's children, she is very far off ever becoming heir to the British throne. The reason why Princess Anne is fifteenth in line to the throne is linked to archaic laws that existed at the time of her birth in 1950, which fortunately no longer apply to royal females born today. 

And despite Zara being the Queen's granddaughter, she was not given a royal title by her mother, Princess Anne. 

As such, she and her rugby player husband Mike Tindall do not complete official duties on behalf of the Queen and have their own separate careers. 

However, the pair do occasionally attend family events with the Queen, including Royal Ascot.

So where do Zara and Mike Tindall and Princess Anne call home?

Princess Anne and Zara and Mike Tindall all live at Gatcombe Park, in Gloucestershire, nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds.

Zara and Mike share their home on the sprawling estate with their three children—Mia, eight, Lena, three, and baby Lucas, who was born in March 2021. 

Gatcombe Park is a 700-acre estate, and a private, royal country home. Its main building is an impressive, Grade II listed home—which is where Princess Anne lives.

The home sits within acres of land on the estate, where Princess Anne also holds annual equestrian events.

Dotted around the large estate are other royal homes including Mike and Zara Tindall's.

Princess Anne's son Peter Phillips and his wife Autumn also lived within the grounds of the 700-acre estate during their marriage, along with their daughters Isla and Savannah.

However, following the sad news of Autumn and Peter's split in February 2020, it's been reported that the pair no longer continue to share their marital home at Aston Farm, on the Gatcombe estate.

Aston Farm is also where Peter's father, Mark Phillips, lives with his second wife.

A brief history of Gatcombe Park

Gatcombe has been the home of the Princess Royal since 1976, when it was bought privately by the Queen for her and her then-husband, Captain Mark Phillips. The Queen bought the beautiful, rural property from the former Home Secretary Lord Butler of Saffron Walden.

In 2013, Anne and her current husband, Timothy Laurence, were joined by Mike and Zara Tindall, when they sold their Cheltenham home and came to live on the Gatcombe estate.

Zara and Mike moved to Gatcombe just before welcoming their first child, Mia Tindall, Princess Anne's third grandchild. It's not clear where on the estate Zara and Mike live, with Princess Anne and her husband taking up residence in the main house.

Gatcombe is certainly a convenient place for the Tindall family to be, with equestrian Zara having many of her horses stabled on the estate.

Who owns Gatcombe Park?

While Princess Anne, Mike, and Zara Tindall's home was bought privately by the Queen over 50 years ago, it was extensively refurbished and renovated prior to the family moving in back in the late 1970s, funded by the Crown purse.

What is Gatcombe Park like inside?

According to reports, the main manor house of Gatcombe, where Princess Anne lives, has five main bedrooms, four secondary bedrooms, four reception rooms, a library, a billiard room, and a conservatory.

Like most private royal residences, there are very few pictures from within the home. However, when Princess Anne opened the new Nightingale Hospital in Glasgow via video link we did get a sneak glimpse of the Princess Royal's home office.

Behind Anne, royal fans can see the peachy walls of Gatcombe, adorned with gold-gilded picture frames. In fact, there's even a sweet picture of Zara and Mike on their wedding day pride of place in the office as well as even more pictures of the family dotted around a desk behind her.

What are the Gatcombe Park grounds like?

The Gatcombe Park estate is famous in the horse and eventing world for hosting many of the sport's annual events.

It's the former home of the Festival of British Eventing, and Zara Tindall herself has often competed there. And Princess Anne has always been keen to make the estate work and earn money for itself, as she revealed on the BBC program Countryfile. She explained, "It's really nice to come back and just be yourself in an area like this. Being able to take on a place like this—for me, I’ve got to make it work. This is not something that comes free, this has got to pay its way, otherwise, I can’t stay here."

The estate also hosts a lot of land for farming, a biannual craft fair, as well as equestrian events, so it certainly pays for itself.

In fact, Princess Anne even shared a glimpse of the farm at Gatcombe on the Royal Family Instagram account.

Taken as part of her guest editor role with Country Life, and to mark her 70th birthday, the pictures allows royal fans to see Anne's gorgeously green farmland and her beautiful horses. 

How much is Gatcombe Park worth?

The price of the home when it was bought in the 70s was not disclosed, but it was reported to have been bought for around £500,000 - £750,000. However, it's likely that the home, with its extensive grounds, is worth much more now!

Is Gatcombe Park open to the public?

The Gloucestershire residence isn't open for visits from the general public, but given that a lot of equestrian events are held there, the public is able to visit the home inadvertently.

However these are held on large grounds, so it's highly unlikely visitors would see the royal's private residences.
