Florals for spring might not exactly be groundbreaking, but musical theater will be breaking new ground when the devilish Miranda Priestly swaps catwalks for curtain calls.
The iconic 2006 movie, The Devil Wears Prada, will be getting the musical treatment this summer.
The movie, which is often cited as one of the best book to movie adaptations, was inspired by a novel written by former Vogue staffer Laura Weisberger.
The story follows a plucky assistant, Andy Sachs, entering the cut-throat world of fashion ruled over by the intimidating glare of Runway editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly.
Laura Weisberger was a former assistant to Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, so many have always speculated just how true to life the story is – though this new musical might challenge that notion (unless Anna Wintour was prone to breaking out into song).
The movie proved to be a worldwide hit, grossing over $326 million against a $35 million budget and Meryl Streep’s performance as the icy fashionista has become a pillar of pop culture.

When does The Devil Wears Prada musical open?
The musical will open at the Nederlander Theatre in Chicago this summer.
The show will have an initial run for five weeks from July 19 before heading to New York City’s Broadway.
The official synopsis for the musical describes the production as “a joyous, funny and – of course – ultra-glamorous story about navigating life’s runway to discover where you’re meant to be…”
It is also described as giving “the hit film a fabulously fresh makeover.”
Who is in the cast for The Devil Wears Prada musical?
With some very big stilettos to fill, Beth Leavel will be playing Miranda Priestly, the role made famous by Meryl Streep.
Beth is a Tony-winning star who has appeared in productions including The Drowsy Chaperone, Mamma Mia! And Elf the Musical.
Playing Andy Sachs, the role made famous by Anne Hathaway, is Taylor Iman Jones.
Taylor has appeared in the US tour of Hamilton.
Who has written the music for The Devil Wears Prada?
None other than the legendary Elton John has created the musical’s soundtrack.
It’s not Elton’s first foray into musical theater, having written music for Billy Elliot the Musical, Lion King and Aida.
Sir Elton has teased that the songs will be "modern" and that he "enjoyed writing every single one."
He also promised that theatergoers will "walk out elated" when they finally see the production.
