Fabric: Leather and quilting

Both leather and quilting are having a serious revival. No longer just for country-style outerwear that wouldn't feel out of place at Balmoral, quilting has been given a Scandi refresh with the likes of Ganni and Arket launching full-length, oversized, duvet-worthy coats. As for the leather trench, if it's good enough for Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and Hermes, then it's good enough for us. If you do fancy following suit and swapping your beige trench for a fancier number, the high-street has a plethora of PU and faux leather iterations at very reasonable prices. 

Colour: Neutrals and checks 

If you're looking to invest in a coat with serious style longevity, let us point you in the direction of two key trends - neutrals and checks. Give classic checks a contemporary feel by looking out for colourful versions, like those seen on the catwalk at Lavin's Paris Fashion Week show for A/W 2020/2021. There's plenty of choice when it comes to neutrals too, with a buffet of beiges, browns, creams and camels available on the high-street. We've fallen head-over-heels for Stella McCartney's ivory funnel coat, but remember - the lighter you go, the higher your dry cleaning bill will be.

Arket's coats have been hugely popular this season, with sell-out success. So you'll need to move fast if this snuggly duvet coat has caught your eye. Surprisingly lightweight, it's made from recycled fabrics for eco brownie points. 

Sure, we can make a case for neutrals, but there's nothing that will transform your everyday outfits quite like a shiny teal trench. Even better, this show-stopper is currently in the sale, reduced to £127.50. 

There are some pieces you should always buy in your correct size (jeans, shoes) but tailoring, knitwear and coats always look more expensive when you size up. This coat is deliberately oversized, giving the classic shape and chic shade a relaxed feel. 

We'd normally steer clear of patterned coats as they date quickly, but a classic check like this is a failsafe piece you'll be wearing for years to come. Wear open to show off your outfit or tie the waist belt tight for a more structured look.
