A video of teenage Meghan Markle showing her sweet relationship with father Thomas Markle has gained thousands of views on social media.

Footage of Meghan Markle in high school in the 1990s has gone viral on TikTok and it features a rare insight into her relationship with father Thomas Markle. 

The video clip, shared on TikTok account @theiconic90s, shows the young Duchess of Sussex chatting with her peers before coming forward to greet her dad, who appears to be behind the camera. 

She can be heard excitedly saying, "Hi daddy!"

Young Megan, who recently turned 40 and was born and raised in California, goes on to say, "I got an English award!"

Thomas responds, saying, "I know" before the short clip ends.

The video shows Meghan with her curly hair styled up in a bun, wearing a floral dress and holding a black bag on her shoulder. 

"Meghan Markle The Duchess of Sussex receiving an English award in the 90s," a caption beside the upload reads.

The video has amassed thousands of views, likes and comments, with many users pointing out how heartbreaking it is that Meghan is no longer in contact with her father, despite clearly having a close father-daughter relationship when she was younger.

"So sad that she says daddy and now look at that relationship," one commenter wrote. 

"I hope she and her dad can build a relationship again," another added.

"Her ‘hi daddy’ broke my heart," a third agreed.

Meghan and Thomas are not believed to have spoken since before her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, where Meghan Markle's wedding dress captured the nation's hearts with its classic elegance. Meghan recently told Oprah about her feelings of “betrayal” after her father denied speaking to the tabloids about her.

Having left their Frogmore Cottage home in the UK to move to LA, it's believed Meghan and Harry still have not had in-person contact with Thomas. 

Speaking on how she has found it hard to rebuild her bond with him, Meghan explained, “I genuinely can’t imagine doing anything to intentionally cause pain to my child. I can’t imagine it. 

”So it’s hard for me to reconcile that.”

Thomas has opened up about his sadness over never having met Prince Harry or his grandson, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, or his newborn granddaughter, Lilibet Diana.

Following news of Lili's birth this year, Thomas claimed he heard about his granddaughter’s arrival on the radio.

Speaking to 90 Minutes Australia, Thomas shared his hopes for building bridges with Meghan and becoming a part of her life again.

“None of this makes sense...I don’t think there’s any problems that can’t be worked out.

”I’ve said I’m sorry about the initial problem. I’ll never give up hope.”
