Queen’s breakfast features a ‘fascinating’ childhood favorite and American cereal with a fruity twist
The Queen’s breakfast is apparently served 'promptly' at 8:30am and includes three options…
The Queen’s breakfast favorites reportedly include a “fascinating” childhood discovery as well as a staple American cereal with her own fruity additions.
- Her Majesty is said to be served three options for breakfast, though there’s another favorite treat she’s enjoyed ever since childhood.
- It’s claimed the Queen first discovered this after following a “compelling smell” around Windsor Castle with Princess Margaret.
- This royal news comes as Princess Diana’s wedding dress left the designer ‘horrified’ on the big day.
For royal fans there’s something always intriguing about what the Queen eats, with it all-too easy to imagine every day involves banquet-like levels of luxurious delicacies. Whilst it seems there are common foods the royals are banned from eating, they are known to tuck into many more simple, every-day items.
Though the Queen’s bizarre sandwich rule and weird way of eating hamburgers certainly give these classics a regal twist. But when it comes to the Queen’s breakfast options throughout her 70 year reign, it seems variety is truly the spice of life. According to Express.co.uk, former royal chef Darren McGrady revealed that the monarch is usually presented with three options at 8:30am.
These are said to include scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and humble marmalade on toast. But it seems that just like so many of us, Her Majesty is also pretty partial to a bowl of American cereal.
Cereal giant Kellogg’s has a Royal Warrant and is an official supplier to Buckingham Palace. And the Queen’s cereal of choice is apparently none other than Special K! Though the Queen is said to prefer giving her Special K an extra twist in the mornings by adding fresh fruit.
But the Queen’s breakfast preferences don’t stop there, as royal author Charles Oliver revealed intriguing insights about her childhood fascination with a rather nostalgic item.
Opening up in his book, Dinner at Buckingham Palace, Charles shared his personal recollections, having worked for the royal households in residences including Balmoral and, of course, Buckingham Palace.

When it comes to one of the Queen’s most long-standing favorites, he explained she’s been “partial to kippers since the war years”. So much so that the monarch even reportedly learnt to cook them. Charles alleged that the then-Princess Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret were exploring Windsor Castle when they smelled a “compelling smell”.
“Fascinated, they traced the smell to its source and found themselves outside the private kitchen of Mrs Alice Bruce, then housekeeper at the castle,” he wrote. “They politely knocked on the door and were welcomed into the old-fashioned kitchen with its great iron oven range —and its frying kippers.”
He continued, “Mrs Bruce gave the princesses their first taste of kipper and showed them how to cook the fish as well. Kippers, in a number of uncomplicated variations, have remained a favorite with the Queen ever since—for breakfast, as a savory or a late-night supper.”
Whilst kippers, Special K, marmalade and scrambled eggs and salmon might be some of her breakfast staples, the Queen’s favorite food remains a mystery.
“[She’s] never divulged what her favorite meal is, because, as one of her staff told me, ‘If she said she had a favorite meal, she would never get served anything else’,” former royal correspondent Gordon Rayner told The Telegraph.
