Princess Diana's Spencer tiara is one of the most iconic royal accessories worn by the Princess of Wales. The item is a family heirloom that belongs to the Spencer family and will one day be passed on to a certain royal.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana's relationship may have ended in divorce after 15 years of marriage, but their fairytale wedding of 1981 is still one of the most iconic moments in recent British history.

On this spectacular wedding day, the Princess of Wales wore her family's heirloom accessory, the diamond-encrusted Spencer tiara. This gorgeous piece became one of the most iconic pieces of the Princess' royal jewelry and is set to go on display for the public in celebration of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

It has also been revealed that a key member of the Royal Family is set to inherit this tiara, the Queen's great-grandchild and Prince William and Catherine's only daughter, Princess Charlotte.

Auction house Sotheby's revealed the tiara's future ownership. The catalog note on the Sotheby's page revealed, "Having been worn by Princess Diana at her wedding, the Spencer Tiara is one of the most famous diadems in modern history." The note then revealed, "The Spencer Tiara is now set to be inherited by Princess Charlotte."

This has surprised some royal fans, as it may have been assumed that the tiara would be kept within the Spencer family and not become part of the Royal Family jewels, particularly as this is an item that has recently been worn by ladies in the Spencer family.

The note revealed, "In the mid-1970s, John Spencer, the 8th Earl Spencer, inherited the tiara. It was subsequently worn by all three of his daughters at their wedding: Lady Jane in 1978; Lady Sarah in 1980; and finally Lady Diana the following year, in 1981. The tiara was most recently worn by Celia McCorquodale - niece of the 10th Earl Spencer Charles - at her wedding in the Spring of 2018."

But perhaps it makes sense for this royal to inherit this item, as she is the grand-daughter of the most famous wearer, Princess Diana. Plus, as a member of the Royal Family, perhaps seven-year-old Princess Charlotte will attend more royal engagements where it is appropriate to wear this piece of jewelry originally created in 1767.

Tiaras are no longer a go-to accessory even for members of the upper-class and aristocracy and it seems only members of the Royal Family and extended Royal Family are seen frequently in tiaras.
