Prince William and Kate Middleton’s rare wedding detail that none of the Queen’s other grandchildren have had is seriously glamorous.

Watched by millions, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding day back in April 2011 is an unforgettable moment in British royal history. From learning who designed Kate Middleton’s wedding dress to Prince William’s first words after seeing Kate on their big day, there was so much to enjoy surrounding the royal wedding. Though amongst all these special touches there was another one that many might not have spotted. And Prince William and Kate Middleton’s rare wedding detail was something that none of the Queen’s other grandchildren have had at theirs.

As Kate Middleton walked down the aisle of Westminster Abbey towards Prince William all eyes were on the happy couple. So much so that what they were walking on - a red carpet -  could well have gone unnoticed, but it was the perfect choice for the future King and Queen Consort

Typically seen at Hollywood premieres, galas and other significant events, Prince William remains the only one of the late Queen’s grandchildren so far to have had a red carpet.

In contrast, his younger brother Prince Harry, who is fifth in the royal line of succession, and his wife Meghan Markle had no carpet at all at their wedding in May 2018. Although the reason for this isn’t known it could simply be that they wanted the historic and stunning stone floor of St George’s Chapel to shine through.

In contrast, Princess Eugenie did have a carpet draped down the aisle at her wedding to Jack Brooksbank just a few months later at the same venue. However, Princess Eugenie’s was a deep blue and whilst we know that the Royal Family wear blue a lot, it seems blue carpets are also a popular choice.

Two of the Queen’s children, Prince Andrew and Princess Anne, had blue carpets over the aisles at their weddings and her grandson Peter Phillips did too when he married his former wife Autumn Kelly.

Princess Beatrice’s private wedding in July 2020 to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi isn’t known to have had any carpet at all given it wasn’t a public occasion and Zara Tindall’s wedding to Mike Tindall took palace at Canongate Kirk which appears to always have a red floor throughout rather than having it specially added for the big day.

The Queen’s two other grandchildren Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn are unmarried.

The only royals to have married with a red carpet down the aisle in recent decades seem to be the then-Prince Charles and Princess Diana and also reportedly the late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. This could perhaps suggest that Prince William and Kate Middleton’s rare wedding detail is something generally only brought out for heirs to the throne.

Although this possible reason hasn’t been directly confirmed by the royals, the decision to have a red carpet reminiscent of other glamorous events perhaps added some extra magic.
