The Royal Family will not wear uniforms to Prince Philip’s funeral following confusion over Prince Harry’s dress code
The Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral will take place on Saturday 17th April at Windsor Castle
Nobody in the Royal Family will wear a military uniform to Prince Philip’s funeral, according to reports.
- The Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral will take place on Saturday 17th April at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle
- It was thought that some senior members of the Royal Family would wear military uniforms for the occasion, while Prince Harry would wear a suit
- In other royal news, this is why Prince Harry can leave quarantine early to attend Prince Philip’s funeral
The news comes after reports that Prince Harry was expected to wear a suit for the occasion, while other senior members of the Royal Family would wear their uniforms.
Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Philip had died on Friday 9th April. “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” a statement read.
“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
The funeral is due to take place at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle on Saturday 17th April – the same place that both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank were married.
The Queen’s husband will not have a state funeral, as per his wishes, and the guest list will be limited to 30 people under current government guidelines. The public has been discouraged from visiting the area due to the pandemic, and Boris Johnson will not attend Prince Philip's funeral in order to free up space for a family member.
Prince Harry has now arrived back in the UK ahead of the service, issuing a statement about his grandfather who he described as “legend of banter”.

Because the Duke of Sussex was stripped of his military positions when he and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, stepped down as senior members of the Royal family, it was thought that he would wear a suit (and possibly his medals) instead of a uniform.
However, sources have now confirmed the Queen has decided that the entire Royal Family will wear mourning dress for the funeral.
Significant move on military uniforms tonight. NO member of the Royal Family will wear them at Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday.A safety first decision given:1. Prince Andrew’s current situation 2. Prince Harry having his military roles removed when he left pic.twitter.com/Cyl8CGcjG1April 14, 2021
Prince Harry will be attending the funeral without his wife, the Duchess of Sussex. Meghan was not able to get medical clearance to fly back to London for the service, as she is currently heavily pregnant with the couple’s second child.
Our thoughts are with the entire Royal Family throughout this difficult time.
