The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge celebrated little Louis' previous birthday with a cute joke.

It's hard to believe that it was four years ago that Kate and William added another name to the list of the Queen's great-grandchildren and introduced their third child, Louis, to the world. But the young Prince turns four today, and the royal couple celebrated one of his previous birthdays with a cute joke.

Two years ago, on his second birthday, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge posted two pictures of their son covered in paint as he took part in some handprint art. In a light-hearted post on their official Instagram account, they wrote, “Instagram Vs Reality. Thank you for your lovely messages on Prince Louis’s second birthday.

“We are very pleased to share today, on Prince Louis' second birthday, new photographs taken by the Duchess this April.”

This year, ahead of his fourth birthday, the Cambridges shared new images of Louis on the beach, taken by his mother Kate, with the caption, "4 years old tomorrow!"

In previous years, photography-enthusiast Kate Middleton has taken adorable new portraits of her three children to mark their big days. Last year saw Prince Louis’ birthday celebrated with a snap showing him proudly riding a bright red bike before he left for his first day of nursery school.

This comes after woman&home reported how Prince Louis is set to share his special day with big brother, Prince George.

Whilst Prince Louis’ birthday is a huge day for him, it’s also a cause for a double celebration in the Cambridge household. Not only is April 23 the day Prince William and Kate Middleton became parents of three, but it’s also St George’s Day.

St George’s Day honors St George, the Patron Saint of England, and eight-year-old Prince George shares his traditional name. Patron Saint days are often marked by the Royal Family and over the years they've shared sweet tributes online for each of the Home Nations’ Patron Saints.
