Prince William wouldn't marry Kate Middleton for years, for a very understandable reason, says a royal expert, who claims the future King feared history could repeat itself.

In 2021 Prince William and Kate's wedding anniversary celebrated 10 years of wedded bliss. Three children later, a whole load of family upheaval, and a lot of changes—the loved-up couple are still going strong.

However, there was a time when some believed that the future Prince of Wales wouldn't ever put a ring on it. The couple dated for seven years before their engagement. As time went on, the Duchess became the source of tabloid ridicule with unkind nicknames like 'Waity-Kaity.'

Per the Express, royal expert Richard Kay claims that William was 'concerned' about rushing into marriage. As the old song goes after all, you can't hurry love—and in his mind, his parents rushed their relationship.

Discussing the later than usual engagement on the Amazon Prime documentary William and Kate: Into The Future,  he explained their snail's pace. “Everything about William you can trace back to what happened to his parents—he lived through the bitter breakup of their marriage."

Prince Charles and Princess Diana's relationship timeline was famously fast. Although the pair had met briefly a few years before they began dating, it was a mere six months before they were engaged.

The couple went on to have a tumultuous relationship which ended in divorce. Prince Charles subsequently married the Duchess of Cornwall but Princess Diana never remarried.

Richard explained, “He knows how much what happened to them destroyed their marriage. He’s very concerned not to make the same mistakes.”

Although it appears the delay in getting down on one knee was of his own volition via the trauma of his parents' disastrous marriage and his mother's untimely and tragic death—there may be more to it.

It's previously been reported that the Queen’s divorce warning to Prince William may have also impacted his desire to take things slow.
