The one royal tradition that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are breaking during lockdown
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have broken a key royal tradition during lockdown.
- Kate and William have been taking to social media platforms in a way that they would not have considered before the coronavirus pandemic.
- The couple are sharing information that is close to their hearts during the crisis as they send sweet messages to charities and the public.
- This follows royal news that Sophie Wessex is secretly volunteering during the coronavirus pandemic.
How are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge breaking royal tradition?
According to royal expert Leslie Carroll, Kate and William are not 'constricted' from using their accounts online like they were before the COVID-19 crisis gripped the nation.
The royal expert said, 'Historically, the royals have been constricted from expressing themselves personally on social media.
'Let’s not forget that Meghan was instructed to shut down her own accounts when she began dating Harry.
'And all social media has come through official account names, most probably written by communications professionals, rather than by members of the royal family themselves.'
But in these challenging times, the public is looking toward the monarchy for leadership, so things are changing.
Leslie Carroll explained, 'Even an institution that is more than a millennium old must adapt to the times we live in now.

'The royal family has been a constant presence in the lives of the public for more than a thousand years.
'And part of "keeping calm and carry[ing] on" is the ability to continue to communicate effectively, continually, and in a reassuring manner.'
Since the UK went into lockdown six weeks ago, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have continued to engage with their patronages and charities via social media.
The Cambridges have also uploaded a sweet video of their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis clapping for the NHS.
Great work, Cambridges!
