Why Adele left her husband Simon Konecki after promising son Angelo a 'united family'
Adele filed for divorce from Simon Konecki in 2019
Adele has finally set the record straight on her split from Simon Konecki, revealing the real reason she decided to end the marriage after just one year.
Adele's 30 album has finally hit shelves, and while much speculation has been cleared up in the lyrics of its 12 incredible tracks, there's still one question on everyone's mind: why did she file for divorce?
The highly anticipated record, which was teased earlier this month with the release of the Easy on Me music video, sees the Grammy-award-winner return to the studio after a six-year-long hiatus for another round of soulful ballads and catchy boppers.
Now a single mother to nine-year-old Angelo, much of the album is dedicated to exploring the complex emotions of parenting and relationships, with Adele's divorce from Simon Konecki high-up on the list of content material.
Its third track, 'My Little Love', even includes a voice note from Adele as she tries to explain to her son why she has separated from his father. In the heartwarming lullaby, the 33-year-old Londoner can be heard comforting Angelo with the reassuring line, “I love your dad ’cause he gave you to me. You’re half me and you’re half Daddy.” She also confesses to feeling "confused", telling the young boy, "I feel like I don’t really know what I’m doing.”
Her conflicted sentiments on her divorce can also be heard in the song, 'Woman Like Me', in which she lashes out at a 'lazy' ex. While the identity of the lover remains unknown, many have speculated that the tune's wrath is directed at her former husband, charity CEO Simon Konkecki.

Why did Adele leave her husband Simon Konecki?
Adele split from Simon in 2019, bringing an end to their eight-year-long relationship. The couple welcomed their first and only child, Angelo Adkins, in 2012, before tying the knot in a private wedding ceremony in 2018. They were unable to make the marriage work, however, and agreed to divorce the following year.
While some of 30's tracks might suggest her marriage breakdown was wrought with resentment, Adele has insisted that the process was far from nasty.
“It just wasn’t right for me anymore,” she told Vogue. “I didn’t want to end up like a lot of other people I knew. I wasn’t miserable miserable, but I would have been miserable had I not put myself first. But, yeah, nothing bad happened or anything like that.”
She went on to emphasize that Simon, who lives nearby Adele's house in Los Angeles, cannot be blamed for their separation. "Neither of us did anything wrong," she revealed.
The Hello singer confessed she simply wasn't content in the marriage any more and needed to break free to regain that happiness.
"If I can reach the reason why I left, which was the pursuit of my own happiness, even though it made Angelo really unhappy—if I can find that happiness and he sees me in that happiness, then maybe I'll be able to forgive myself for it," she said.
Adele's guilt over the impact of the divorce on her son largely stemmed from breaking a life-long vow she had made in her youth.
As the daughter of separated parents, she had always wanted to raise her potential children with a partner. “I, from a very young age, promised myself that when I had kids, that we’d stay together. We would be that united family," she revealed in her interview with Oprah earlier this week.
As for her thoughts on Simon today, Adele has nothing but positive words to say about the 47-year-old entrepreneur. "I'd trust him with my life," she told Vogue. "I definitely chose the perfect person to have my child with. That—after making a lot of knee-jerk reactions—is one of my proudest things I've ever done."
