Sandra Bullock's new box office record as The Lost City earns over $100M
Sandra Bullock’s new box office record is proof that movie star magic is still alive
She might be famous for being Miss Congeniality but Sandra Bullock’s new box office record has crowned her a queen of Hollywood.
Sandra Bullock’s latest movie, The Lost City, which co-stars Channing Tatum, Brad Pitt and Daniel Radcliffe, has grossed over $100M at the domestic US box office.
Talk about going out on a high, after Sandra Bullock announced an acting break to focus on her two children and long-term boyfriend.
In the era of streaming, many have feared that traditional star-led vehicles find it harder to reach the wide audiences they used to, with films like Marvel blockbusters and the Star Wars movies being the only ones to generate big box office hauls.
This is why Sandra’s latest achievement is testament to her enduring star-power – The Lost City is the first studio comedy to pass $100M in North America since Sony’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in July 2019 and it’s also the first romantic comedy or romantic drama to gross over $100M since Little Women in late 2019.
However, the real achievement here is that this makes Sandra Bullock only the second woman to front 11 films that have surpassed $100M at the US box office.
The only woman who has fronted more is Julia Roberts, who has starred in 12 $100M+ movies. (Scarlett Johansson has also been involved in 12 movies that have grossed over $100M, however, most of these are the Avengers movies with industry officials split on whether this counts as a star-vehicle or an ensemble, sequel-driven performance).

It also makes the screen icon - famous for starring in some of the best romantic movies - the first actress to have $100 million earners in movies over four different decades.
In the 1990s, she had Speed, A Time to Kill and The Prince of Egypt, in the 2000s it was Miss Congeniality, The Proposal, and The Blind Side, the 2010s saw The Heat, Gravity, Minions, and Ocean’s 8, and now the 2020s have nabbed her one more in The Lost City.
In an industry that typically puts a shelf life on actresses, Sandra’s continued winning streak at the age of 57 should hopefully prove to decision-makers in Hollywood that women shouldn’t be out to pasture past a certain age.
Fans online certainly agree.
Comments written online include, “Sandra is truly one of the last movie stars.”
Sandra’s next movie will be an action-thriller called Bullet Train, where the Oscar-winner reunites with The Lost City co-star Brad Pitt, as well as Zazie Beetz and Aaron-Taylor Johnson.
Could this be another massive earner for the Oscar winner?
