Late-night TV show hosts reflect on Derek Chauvin's verdict, demanding 'we all must continue to call out injustice'

All eyes were on Derek Chauvin on April 20. Jurors found the former police officer guilty on all counts in the murder of George Floyd.

Floyd's horrific story made headlines across the nation—and the world— in 2020 when Chauvin knelt on the 46-year-old's neck for more than nine minutes, which ultimately caused him to lose his life. Speaking worldwide outrage, the Black Lives Matter movement quickly demanded justice and equality. 

No verdict could ever bring Floyd back, and our country still has many obstacles to overcome. The hosts of late-night TV acknowledged these sentiments during their  monologues before diving into their routines.

Jimmy Fallon

The Tonight Show host took the opportunity before entertaining the audience to discuss the outcome of the case. Fallon insisted that the verdict is a step in the right direction but acknowledged that police reform is something that still requires our nation's attention. 

"Too often, justice isn't served, and the need for police reform remains. We all must continue to call out injustice until things change for the better," Fallon said.

Stephen Colbert

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert also opened its segment by addressing the verdict.

"America still has a problem of over-policing and systemic racism, but hopefully this is a step toward a future where police being held accountable for their actions isn't headline material and a hope that accountability today is a deterrent for tomorrow," the host said. 

James Corden

During The Late Late Show with James Corden, the entertainer said, "Real justice would be Black Americans not having to live in fear of being stopped by police and killed, and surely that is a verdict that we need to work towards," according to The New York Times. 

Celebrities and other notable figures, including Michelle Obama, Viola Davis, and Kerry Washington, have also spoken out when the verdict was announced.
