What is Killing Eve season 4 about?

The overall story-arc for the latest season hasn’t yet been confirmed, though when it comes to what Killing Eve season 4 will be about, the season 3 finale left fans seriously confused about Villanelle’s future as an assassin and hinted at a possible reconciliation with Eve. After meeting up with her nemesis-turned-love-interest British intelligence officer Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh), trained killer Villanelle (Jodie Comer) agreed with her that they would part ways and “never look back”.

Though they promptly break this promise within mere seconds as they turn back from opposite ends of the bridge where the agreement was made. Throughout Killing Eve season 3 Villanelle seemed to be regretting her line of work and hoping to remove herself from the tangled web she’d found herself in with the dangerous group, The Twelve, that Eve was pursuing.

And it seems that Killing Eve season 4 will be continuing down this theme of second chances and changing long-established ways. Opening up to Entertainment Weekly, the show’s executive producer and head writer on season 4, Laura Neal, this is the focus of the “central question” for the season.

She shared that, “the central question of season 4 is ‘Can these women change? And if so, what is the nature of their change?”

"We've asked that pretty much for every character, and that's the jumping-off point,” Laura revealed. “Were these people born or were they made? And if they were made, is there a way back for them?"

As for the action, Villanelle will go toe to tail with a formidable adversary named Lucifer. "Villanelle literally takes on Lucifer in episode 1," says Laura. "In terms of a cosmic battle, you're not going to get any bigger than that."

Anyone in the US who’s already watched Killing Eve season 4 will likely have their own thoughts on what went down with Villanelle’s rather unexpected new adversary, Lucifer. But the season premiere’s godly theme certainly seems to suggest that Villanelle is at least genuinely trying to put her past misdeeds behind her. How long it will last remains to be seen…

Either way, now they know when Killing Eve season 4 is on, fans can look forward to weeks of misdirection and classic Killing Eve humour ahead of the show ending.
