House of Gucci is almost here and with a cast including Lady Gaga and Adam Driver bringing the iconic Gucci family to life, the release can’t come quick enough.

From the moment we saw Lady Gaga in the House of Gucci trailer, we knew that the upcoming biopic was set to be a major movie moment this year. Starring the iconic singer and Adam Driver as her on-screen husband, the two stars stunned in their House of Gucci costumes earlier this year and anticipation has been building. Now both stars have stepped out for the House of Gucci London premiere on November 9 with Lady Gaga wowing in a beautiful purple dress with billowing sleeves whilst Adam looked smart in a stylish suit. Now the release is just weeks away and with the House of Gucci inspired by the events leading up to and following the real-life assassination of Maurizio Gucci, there’s plenty of intrigue in this remarkable tale.

But what is House of Gucci about, which Gucci family members do Lady Gaga and Adam Driver play and when can you finally watch the movie?

*Warning: spoilers ahead!*

What is House of Gucci about?

House of Gucci is inspired not only by the extraordinary and dramatic lives of members of the Gucci family, but more specifically by the sensational book, House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed. The film and book cover the murder of Maurizio Gucci, the former head of Gucci fashion house, who died in March 1995.

His former wife, Patrizia Reggiani, was convicted in 1998 of arranging his assassination. The couple had two children together and went on to divorce the year before his death after Maurizio left Patrizia for another woman. Patrizia served almost two decades in prison after being found guilty and was released in 2016, with her motives for the murder reportedly believed to have been jealousy, resentment of her former husband and a desire to keep more control of the Gucci estate.

House of Gucci follows these shocking events, depicting Patrizia’s arrival into the Gucci family and how her ambitions for the fashion house cause friction between her and Maurizio’s relatives. Initially considered the ultimate glamorous power couple, things soon took a dark turn for Patrizia and Maurizio as his murder shocked the world and these tragic events are set to make for some gripping scenes as they’re brought to the big screen in House of Gucci.

Who does Lady Gaga play in House of Gucci?

The House of Gucci sees singer Lady Gaga in her first lead role since her acclaimed performance in A Star is Born back in 2018. She takes center stage as Patrizia Reggiani, later Gucci, who marries into the fashion powerhouse family. Patrizia soon begins to make her mark on the business and Lady Gaga’s wedding dress in the film has already delighted fans

Patrizia was later convicted of hiring someone to eliminate her ex-husband and it seems that the complexity of the role was something Lady Gaga embraced. As reported by Sky News, Lady Gaga opened up at the recent House of Gucci premiere, revealing that portraying this powerful woman wasn’t without its challenges, stating, "That's part of my artistry, is leaning into the suffering of a character.”

She reportedly went on to add, "To say that it would be easy to play a murderer would be a lie. I don't believe she had the murder gene, but I do believe that she was triggered and pushed so far over the edge that she committed this murder."

And, just like with her character of Ally Maine in A Star is Born, Lady Gaga revealed that letting Patrizia Reggiani go after remaining in character for 18 months of filming The House of Gucci won't be easy.

"I would say that in terms of letting the character go, I don't know that I'd ever let her go," she explained. "Today I chose this ring and it looks just like her engagement ring—I feel her inside of me all the time and I think it will take years. It took me years to shed Ally from A Star Is Born and I think the same will be true here."

However, Patrizia herself is understood to be less than thrilled with the idea of being portrayed by Lady Gaga in House of Gucci. According to PEOPLE, she has previously told Italian news agency, Ansa, that she was “annoyed” that the star didn’t approach her.

"I'm annoyed by the fact that Lady Gaga is portraying me in the new Ridley Scott film without even having the courtesy or the good sense to come and meet me," Patrizia reportedly explained, adding that it was “about common sense and respect."

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga has subsequently shared the intriguing reason why she never met Patrizia as she was preparing for the movie. As reported by British Vogue, the singer and actor told the publication how she felt that she had to find her own way with this major role.

Lady Gaga said, “I only felt that I could truly do this story justice if I approached it with the eye of a curious woman who was interested in possessing a journalistic spirit so that I could read between the lines of what was happening in the film’s scenes”.

“Meaning that nobody was going to tell me who Patrizia Gucci was. Not even Patrizia Gucci,” she went on to declare.

Who does Adam Driver play in House of Gucci?

Acting opposite Lady Gaga is Adam Driver as her on-screen husband Maurizio Gucci, whose murder Patrizia was convicted of arranging. Adam is perhaps best known for his role in Star Wars and is set to capture audience’s imaginations with his portrayal of Maurizio.

The grandson of Gucci founder Guccio Gucci was shot outside his place of work in Milan in 1995 and we can't wait to see the talented actor's portrayal of this famous figure in the new movie.
