Wellness update for your home
Interior designer Suzie Tipple discovered how the right window treatments helped add character and a sense of calm to her busy family room without a full-scale makeover
Never underestimate the impact the right window treatment can have on the overall aesthetic of any room. Not only do these window dressings guarantee each room is well-dressed, but they also ensure each space better serves your needs. Well-designed and well-fitting blinds cover all the practical considerations like light and heat retention; while decorative curtains can transform any scheme and insulate in an instant; and elegant shutters provide privacy and style in equal measure.
Hillarys have a team of experts who can help bring your vision to life in a way that you might not have imagined, as interior designer Suzie Tipple – lover of multifunctional spaces in her busy family home – discovered while undertaking her own home makeover.
Despite being a highly competent interior designer, Suzie still felt more at ease calling in the experts at Hillarys to offer an extra level of expertise for the projects in her own home.
“Measuring up windows is such a precise skill, and it’s the part of my work as an interior designer that I dread,” she admits. “Mistakes can be costly and I feel like there’s often a lot of things you don’t realise until you start.”
Watch – top ideas to get started
Welcoming a sense of calm to a cosy corner
When all you want to do is curl up with a good book and take some time out it helps to be able to pull the blinds and create a sense of stillness, especially in a busy family home. That is exactly what Suzie envisioned for her cosy corner – a snug-style room around the other side of the kitchen with inviting armchairs – a place where she was seeking solace and comfort.
“Predominantly it’s me and my daughter who use it," says Suzie. "It's a nice little cosy area to retreat to in the evenings. I especially love it now because we have these blackout blinds which make the space feel even more cosy and comfortable to be in."
Hillarys introduced the Harper Almond Electric blackout Roman blind to give the cosy corner an element of complete seclusion, ideal to allow Suzie and her daughter to escape for some downtime. The practical blinds are also motorised for ease of use – so Suzie doesn’t even need to leave the comfort of her armchair to use them.
Shutting the world out while letting the light in
The right window treatments should be a perfect balance of function and form, which Hillarys knows only too well. As demonstrated perfectly with the thoughtfully designed INTU Micro Hive Pleated blinds which were the ideal solution for Suzie’s bi-fold doors in her dining room area.
The clever design features an elegant fabric that provides privacy and a sense of escapism while still allowing plenty of diffused natural light to nourish the soul and help the family feel connected to the elements of nature. This design could be adapted for any room seeking light and privacy in equal measure.
On a practical level, it's also highly adaptable for use all year round, as Suzie explains: “The honeycomb design keeps the heat out in summer but keeps the heat in during the winter.”
The thermally efficient INTU Micro Hive blinds are layered with the Echo Silver Voile curtain to soften the look and add the perfect finishing touch to style the room. They also act in a similar way to retain light and privacy, even when the blinds are fully open.
Considerate of character
In a home like Suzie’s where the windows come in all shapes and sizes, it can feel all the more like a challenge to find the perfect solution for every room. Given this, Suzie felt it was important to call in professionals because nothing phases the team at Hillarys who are equipped to deal with awkward spaces and bespoke measurements – finding the perfect window dressing every time.
“I would be nervous to return to my old ways of buying window dressings,” she says when considering the time and cost involved in the process. “Sourcing fabrics, to have made up according to my calculations, and making guesses as to which mechanism best suits my window feels archaic now.”
Suzie felt at ease knowing that her Hillarys advisor would come up with a fabulous solution for every window in her home, then measure and fit, taking away the pressure of her having to do it alone. Suzie’s stunning home is famed for its external blue shutters, so when her Hillarys designer suggested lining the curtains with a blue blackout fabric so they look just as good from the outside she knew she was in safe hands. It’s this attention to detail that makes it all the more worthwhile to seek professional guidance when buying window dressings.
