Unboxing Floks Wool Mattress Topper

True to their eco-conscious stance, Floks sends the Wool Mattress Topper in a big, reusable bag. It’s crafted from the same unbleached Egyptian cotton as the quilted outside and it comes with a handle too. I was instantly eyeing it up as a new travel bag. In fact, I think you could have convinced me to spend £100 just on the packaging itself.

Thanks to the Floks Wool Mattress Topper arriving rolled, I could spread it fully across my 38cm bed with it reaching all four corners. It does have a slightly earthy smell, but this isn’t even noticeable when you put your bed linen on. I have a sensitive nose, so if it was going to disrupt anyone, it would have been me.

Who would Floks Wool Mattress Topper suit?

Wool and Egyptian cotton are a match made in heaven, especially if you’re a hot sleeper or if you have sensitive skin. They’ll naturally offer gentle feel, moisture wicking, and temperature regulation all night long. All parts of the duvet are naturally hypoallergenic and asthma friendly. They haven’t been treated with dyes or chemicals, which I always think makes it a little easier to take a deep breath in bed. Nobody wants to be sleeping on chemicals.

What sets the Floks Wool Mattress Topper apart from the rest of the wool toppers is that it is crafted from the very finest materials: you’ve got traceable British wool (which wins on a sustainability front as well) and Egyptian cotton, which is widely accepted as the best cotton in the world thanks to its durability and absorbency. And what’s great is that you can really feel the quality. The Wool Mattress Topper is packed full, giving a lofty, cushioning layer that doesn’t compromise on being supportive too. The cotton exterior feels crisp and, in short, I felt that this was a splurge, but a very well spent splurge.

So, it’s gentle and it’s luxurious, but there’s one final touch that finesses the trifecta. It’s really sustainable. The bedding is made in the UK, with all biodegradable and sustainable materials. Floks is a B-Corp and with credentials like this, it’s easy to see why.

How does Floks Wool Mattress Topper fit on the bed?

The whole Floks Wool Mattress Topper spreads easily and generously over the bed. My mattress is 38cm deep, which Floks suggests is the maximum depth that it can handle, but I had no issues stretching the elastic straps around all four corners.

Mine looked a little creased at first, but it very quickly smoothed out and stayed perfectly in place throughout the night.

What is Floks Wool Mattress Topper like to sleep on?

Now, I’ve slept on my fair share of wool mattress toppers, but this is easily one of my favourites. As a back or side sleeper, I like some plushness, but I’m not a big fan of sink-in foam. This offered the perfect balance of cushioning and support. I could still feel my firm mattress underneath me, but the bony parts of my body no longer told me that I was sleeping on what feels like a slab of concrete at the best of times.

Over the month that I slept on this, I actually forgot it was there, which is proof that this was doing a stunning job. My perfect sleep setup was consistently good and I found a routine of restfulness that was blissful. The problems only arose when I took this off to send the sample back (we only loan these for testing). I was puzzled when I lay back in my mattress and all my old grievances came rushing back. Safe to say, I put one of these mattress toppers in my shopping basket that night.

Is Floks Wool Mattress Topper cooling?

As a generally hot sleeper, I found the Floks Wool Mattress Topper really helpful for regulating my body temperature. When I woke up, my skin didn’t feel clammy, and I found I was sleeping much more consistently. I actually wear a fitness tracker and it named me ‘an architect of sleep’ as a result of my consistent body temperature.

Whilst I do get hot in the night, I needed to loan this to someone with more serious sweats than myself, enter, my mum. She’s post-menopausal now, but still suffers from night sweats that will wake her up and keep her tossing and turning. She said that the Floks Wool Mattress Topper was really helpful. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m not the ice queen now,” she says, “but I was waking up maybe once in the night as opposed to what felt like torturingly high numbers before.” The real proof? She bought one of these toppers too. If only they had a discount for buying more than one.

Cleaning Floks Wool Mattress Topper

On the website, Floks has lots of helpful advice for how to clean your mattress topper. They recommend picking a sunny day to hang your topper outside maybe once a month. Floks says that “sunlight naturally revitalizes the wool, restoring its antimicrobial properties and keeping your topper fresh and breathable.”

If you want a deeper clean, they categorically say not to put this in the washing machine. To keep it comfy and well cushioned, you’ll need to take it to a specialist dry cleaner.

How does Floks Wool Mattress Topper compare?

I mentioned that I swapped out my Woolroom Deluxe Luxury Wool Mattress Topper for this, so I imagine that you have some questions about what it’s like to sleep on. From an anecdotal perspective, the two are almost identical. I felt cool, comfortable, and well-supported on both. From a numbers perspective, my sleep statistics are almost identical for body temperature and sleep time, so you really have to start nit picking to choose between the two. The Woolroom is more expensive, which goes against it, but it is washable. That’s the toss-up you’ll have to make. How much will it cost you to get your Floks dry cleaned every three months, if you’re good and you stick to the recommended schedule. And are you willing to look at the long term cost-saving benefits of the Woolroom topper?

My other alternative is The White Company’s Hypoallergenic Comfort Topper. This swaps out the wool for polyester and Egyptian cotton for normal cotton, which means that it’s a less luxurious buy. It doesn’t boast the same cooling properties, but it will put you in a good place price wise. This costs half as much as the Floks topper, so it’s a great budget buy if you still want to feel like you’re treating yourself. It’s a bit of a contradiction, I know.

Should you buy Floks Wool Mattress Topper?

If you need a cooling mattress topper and you have sensitive skin, this is an investment that you won’t regret. It’s a splurge, but we spend one third of our lives in bed, so I think it’s worth it.
