Blind tasted by a panel of experts including wine writer Oz Clarke, the Morrisons champagne is half the price of competitors including Moët & Chandon Imperial Brut, at £36, Veuve Clicquot Brut Yellow Label, which is £35 and Lanson Le Black Label Brut, priced at £33.
Which? said of the Morrisons Champagne: “This golden champagne with stewed apple aromas, rich flavours and a hint of sweetness won the adoration of our experts to become our top-scorer. Excitement swelled when they saw the price.”
Which other champagnes scored highly?
Waitrose’s Brut Champagne, which costs £19.99, came in second place, while Moet & Chandon’s Imperial Brut Champagne, which is a little steeper in price, came third.
The judges also commented on the Moët & Chandon Imperial Brut, judging it on its: “candied notes, mellow aromas, crisp acidity, and a cashew-nut finish”. However, in a nod to why it may not have landed in first place one expert called it a “little bland”.
