How to pick the best Mother’s Day gift this year, according to the woman&home mums and daughters
While we believe mums deserve recognition all year round, Mother’s Day is the one day we put a little extra effort and dedication into making the mother figures in our lives feel special. And they come in all shapes and sizes - from the aunt who’s always been there for you and the grandmother who always sends you a card when something good (or bad) happens, to the older sisters who played mum growing up. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to paying homage to the motherly heroes in our lives, which is why we love Boots’ Mother’s Day campaign - Love for all.
This year, Mother’s Day falls on March 10, and with the big day fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking about how you’ll want to spoil them (or be spoiled). From breakfast in bed to alone time with a pampering set, there are plenty of ways of making this Mother’s Day the best one yet with Boots’ selection of thoughtful gifts. To give you some inspiration, we asked the woman&home mums what their ideal Mother’s Day gift would be and this is what they had to say…
Love for all: how to gift thoughtfully this Mother’s Day
“Mother's Day (and every day!) should be about making memories, spending time together, and enjoying plenty of cuddles”, says Sarah Joan Ross, Editor-in-Chief of woman&home.com. “As both a daughter and a mother, this year will involve giving and (hopefully) receiving. For my mum and mother-in-law, I plan to wrap something small and sentimental, like a printed photo along with a nice lunch to express my thanks for all they do.”
As for what she would like to receive from her two boys? “I would cherish a homemade card (they have a magical way of making every mum's heart melt) paired with something that promises relaxation— pampering beauty goodies to indulge in some R&R is every working mum's dream. Oh, and complete control of the remote, so I can watch exactly what I want on Netflix. Bliss!"
For Hannah Fernando, editor of woman&home, quality time with her family is number one on the list. “It's not about ostentatious gestures or gifting for me. A simple cup of tea, a pass to stay in bed for an extra hour and some good old-fashioned family time is all I am hoping for. Oh, and some time with my lovely Mum too. In a world where we are all busy, isn't it nice to treat yourself to a day out of the fast lane?”
And what about mums-to-be? For our fashion editor Rivkie Baum, who’s currently counting the days until she welcomes her baby girl, it will be all about relaxation and peace. “This Mother's Day will be my first, as we're awaiting the imminent arrival of our little girl. Likely to only be a few days old, I'm aiming for simple pleasures this Mother's Day. A cup of tea in bed, brunch at home and a nice relaxing day of us hanging out together, getting used to our new world. If we're up to heading out, a trip to visit my mum will be a special moment on the agenda too”, says Rivkie.
As joyous as Mother’s Day can be, it can also be a difficult time for people who’ve lost loved ones. Sarah Cooper-White, Group Beauty Director at woman&home, knows the bittersweet feeling of celebrating the day with her children after her mum’s passing. “Having lost my own mum only a few years ago, Mother's Day does leave an ache in my heart that my lovely mum is no longer here to celebrate with. My sister and I used to love to spoil her with flowers and a nice lunch out”, Sarah says. “But I am also a mum myself and my kids always come up trumps. I don't expect big flamboyant gifts, for me, it's a day to appreciate the little things. Breakfast in bed (and maybe some peace to eat it!), an extra big cuddle, a lovely handmade card and maybe a whole day without any squabbling or laundry to do, is pretty much perfect for me!”
