How we testedFAQs
No hair tool kit is complete without one of the best hair curler options. Key to creating different levels of movement and bounce, the new generation of wands, tongs and wavers use the latest technology to create professional finishes at home. But with so many styling tools to choose from, finding the right one for you isn’t always easy.
Our advice? Seek out a curling wand that caters to your specific hair type and style requirements. Much like the best hair dryers and best hair straighteners, the best curling wand or tong for you will depend on what look you’re after. From loose, undone waves to tight, ringlet curls, there’s a tool out there to create every style – including curlers for short hair. Some, like the T3 Whirl Trio or Dyson Airwrap, can create various looks with an interchangeable design.
Technique, as well as the tool itself, can also impact the results, which is why it’s worth swotting up on how to curl your hair with a curling wand. After beachy waves? “Use smaller sections and twist wrap the hair,” says Adam Reed, legendary hair stylist and ghd ambassador. To do this, “Twist the hair first, then wrap it around the tong to create a spiral effect and more definite wave,” he advises. For bouncy curls, use a big barrel to hold larger, untwisted sections of hair. Ahead, you'll find our reviews of the best hair curler buys on the market.
Easily style your hair on-the-go with this BaByliss cordless curling tong. Boasting a 25mm barrel, this curling wand creates effortlessly glossy and defined curls in hardly any time. With a micro heating matrix technology, and powered by lithium ion, this tool instantly and evenly distributes heat across the ceramic wand in order to create enhanced and long-lasting curls. With 40 minutes of cordless styling time and three heat settings to choose from, what more could you possibly want? Oh, and it's currently 72% off!
Speaking of cordless curlers, save £130 on this large 28mm barrel waving wand. Creating those soft, loose beachy waves (even when set to a lower temperature), this instantly heating tool offers ionic conditioning to lock in moisture and ensure your hair remains healthy and frizz-free. Whether you don't have a plug close to your mirror, or perhaps you're looking for a tool that you can use to touch-up your strands throughout the day, this cordless option is your answer.
Our top 6 hair curlers for every hair type, tested by us
Best overall
Best overall
This tool has 3 interchangeable heads, each of which creates a different kind of wave in your hair. You can buy 4 additional barrels for other styles too, another plus for this high-quality wand. It reaches 210°C at max temperature and our tester found that the heat remains consistent for one-pass styling, meaning your roots, mid-lengths and ends get the same heat treatment in one go. Impressive stuff!
Best for short hair
Best for short hair
To lift and curl short hair, there's nothing better than the ghd Rise, which is a true volumising lifesaver. The brush is easy to use through the hair, and the results are nothing short of salon-worthy. Its max temperature is 185°C to cut down on damage, and while it may take a minute to get used to, once you get to grips with it, it's unbeatable for short hair.
Best luxury
Best luxury
It's pricey yes, but it really can do it all, including give you a beautiful curly blowout. The attachments can take a minute to get used to, but once you've got it you can curl, wave smooth, and simply dry your hair without damaging it. Though a long-lasting hold can be difficult to achieve depending on your hair type, once you've mastered it, you won't want to use anything else.
Creates loose curls
Best for loose curls
This tool is effective on short, long and medium-length hair, with a barrel that's great for a natural-curl look. Easy to use and with a long-length cord to make styling wherever easy, it's perfect for travel too. Our tester found that though they tend to be loose, the curls created with this wand are long lasting too.
Creates defined curls
Best for defined curls
This is in the same ghd Curve family as the previous hair curler, but the bigger barrel size results in the creation of serious Hollywood waves, as opposed to looser curls, which last all day. It gets up to 185°C and comes with a host of great safety features for your peace of mind, too.
Great for thick hair
Best for thick hair
You can trust the ghd Curve 1" Classic Curl wand to create long-lasting curls, even if your hair is thicker. It has a host of other features too, including a safety stand, so that you can use the medium sized barrel to suitably zhuzh up your hair. You can find cheaper wands with this barrel type, but we love this one thanks to its excellent quality.

1. T3 Whirl Trio Interchangeable Styling Wand

We rated the T3 Whirl Trio Styling Wand highly on our list, and with good reason too. This hair tool is interchangeable and comes with three heads – a 25mm barrel for undone waves, a 19-32mm barrel for tousled waves, and a 38mm option for loose waves. There are also an additional four barrels that can be purchased separately, making this curling wand a truly customisable pick.
Not only does this curler earn top marks for versatility, but it also rates high on quality. Every barrel features a custom-blend ceramic seal for smooth and shiny results. Heat-wise, the Whirl Trio reaches a maximum temp of 210°C, which is the setting recommended for thick and coarse hair types. And this heat remains consistent for one-pass styling, meaning your roots, mid-lengths and ends get the same heat treatment in one go. On testing, this translated to sleek, uniform curls in record time. We’re impressed!

2. ghd Rise Hot Brush

Anyone with a short hairstyle probably already knows why a hot brush made this best curling wand list (spoiler: ease and convenience). The ghd Rise is a saving grace for many short-haired consumers ooking for a tool to help volumise and zhuzh up a cropped 'do. The Rise opts against the traditional wand barrel and instead goes for a brush design that’s easy to use. The results? A salon-worthy, bouncy blow-out that’s free from flyaways.
When it comes to temperature settings, this lightweight option heats up to 185°C, aka ghd’s identified optimum temperature for styling hair without risk of damage. You can use this hair curler for a big, bouncy blow-dry, loose curls, or even for a wavy hairstyle – the possibilities are endless. However, we agree that this tool is best for use on shorter hairstyles. Just note that it does take some getting used to at first. But once you find your footing, it's pretty much wash and wear with this easy-to-use option.

3. Dyson Airwrap Complete

Yes, it’s expensive. But when you factor in all that this trusty tool does, it's undoubtedly worth every single penny. The Dyson Airwrap Complete Styler is engineered for multiple hair types and styles. As long as you get the hang of the attachments (our step-by-step guide to how to use the Dyson Airwrap can help with that) users can curl, wave, smooth, and dry hair without using extreme heat, making it ideal for thin, dry or damaged strands. It attracts and wraps sections of hair using only the power of air via the brand's trademark Coanda effect.
It also styles and dries simultaneously, combining powerful airflow with controlled heat to dry your hair as it goes. If you're familiar with the genius behind the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, then you'll appreciate the low-damage tech behind their best-selling curler. Those used to a quicker, more polished curl might find that the Airwrap doesn't give a long-lasting ringlet, especially on touch-ups, but we found a way around this once we used it on damp strands. It also impressed us regarding how healthy our hair looked and felt after use (no fried tresses here), but again, for this price, we didn't expect any less than perfection.

4. ghd Curve Creative Curl Wand

The ghd Curve Creative is a top-rated tool that works just as well on short and medium hairstyles as it done on long hair. With a 23-28mm tapered barrel, users can create natural-looking curls and deep waves for a beautiful tousled beachy effect. Complete with a protective cool tip (and heat resistant glove), this wand is safe and easy to manoeuvre without the risk of burning skin. Other features we appreciate include the professional-length cord to allow for flexible styling, automatic sleep mode after 30 minutes idle time and universal voltage for easy worldwide travel.
This wand also features the brand's ultra-zone technology – that guarantees an optimal curling temperature of 185°C is maintained throughout the section of hair. Ultimately, this means you get uniform, long-lasting curls that stay in place all day/night long. We were seriously impressed by this tool and found it extremely easy to master. If your go-to hairstyle is an undone, loose wave – this is the tool for you. Trust us!

5. ghd Curve Classic Wave Wand

Nope, not a typo: This is indeed another version of the previous curler, the Curve Creative, only for more textbook glamorous Hollywood waves. And like its predecessor, the Classic Curve offers the same ultra-zone technology that guarantees 185°C is maintained across the whole barrel, for shiny, long-lasting curls. The difference with this option? Barrel size=curl size.
This wand has a 1 1/2"–1" oval-shaped wand that in practice we found created glossy, defined waves and glamorous movement on longer hair. We got a bigger, more voluminous curl as compared to the beachy tousle of the previous model. Fear not, though, as it also has the former's safety features, such as a protective cool tip, glove, built-in safety stand, long cord, and universal voltage. For those who want a more classic, old Hollywood glam to their curls, this iconic styler should be first pick.
Best hair curler for thick hair
6. ghd Curve Classic Curl Tong
Our expert review:

Reasons to avoid
Not only is the Curve Classic Curl Tong capable of clamping and curling through the thickest of hair, but it also provides a gleaming, long-lasting finish. You can also be assured of those other standard ghd features, such as a built-in safety stand, cool tip, and uniform heating all throughout thanks to their special tech. We love using this medium-sized barrel to create hairstyles for fine hair as it’s easy to add volume. On thicker hair, it provides just the right level of natural-looking tightness, which loosens up naturally as the day goes on.
As this is one of the most common barrel sizes, you might be able to find a cheaper alternative if budget requires – however, ghd's quality really comes through in look, feel, and sturdiness. That long cord alone provides a level of practicality and ease of use we haven't found in similar tools. A two-year manufacturer's guarantee also ensures you receive most bang for your buck. Overall, this is an ideal middle-of-the-road solution for all hair types and textures.

7. BaByliss 9000 Cordless Waving Wand
Our expert review:

Reasons to avoid
In the market for a cordless hair curler? Opt for this hot tool from BaByliss. The sleek and simple design has a 25mm barrel that’s the perfect size for curling medium hairstyles and hairstyles for long hair, delivering beautiful, bouncy curls. Once charged - which takes three hours - you’ll have 40 minutes of wireless use at maximum temperature. We found that this was more than enough time to style a full head of long hair – just remember to pack the charger in your suitcase when taking the tool on holiday.
As for the tech, the wireless wand boasts something called "Micro Heating Matrix Technology", which ensures the heat is evenly distributed across the device for a uniform curl. It also features ultra-smooth ceramic coating which helps create those shiny, cascading curls. As well as the curlers, you get a mat, case and heat protective glove included. The only downside is that this tool is slightly heavier than others we tried, which is generally a given with cordless tools, and might result in arm ache after a while.

8. Cloud Nine The Curling Wand

For a traditional curling wand, you can’t go too wrong with this classic barrel from Cloud Nine. It’s super easy to use and can create countless styles from big, bouncy curls to softer, laidback waves. And while it doesn’t have a cool tip like other designs, we liked the fact you can curl sections of hair right to the very ends – just be sure to wear the heat-resistant glove while styling. As well as this, the box includes a heat-resistant case, a bamboo brush, a heat protection ‘Magical Potion’ spray plus a reusable water bottle.
So, while it is expensive, you do get good bang for your buck with all the added extras. In terms of tech, the hot tool features four variable temperatures (auto, low, medium and high) to cater to all hair types and textures. Plus, the 25mm barrel is infused with the brand’s signature healing minerals that help to seal the hair’s cuticle and lock in moisture for a shinier, healthier look. We saw a difference when using this tool – with notably glossier, bouncier curls. To boost staying power, we recommend applying one of the best hair styling products to finish.
Best hair curler for tight curls
9. Revamp Progloss Tight Curl Stick

Enhance and define natural hairstyles with this super slim curling stick from Revamp that has been specifically designed with tight curls and coils in mind. There are five heat settings to choose from (we recommend going low for fine, delicate or colour-treated hair), a cool tip and a three-metre cable that makes styling hair a total breeze. The slim barrel, that measures just 10mm, is infused with keratin, coconut and argan oil for glossy, shiny results.
To use, simply wind a small section of hair around the stick in the direction of the desired curl and hold for a few seconds before releasing. We found that alternating directions created a more natural-looking result. While this stick is limited to creating tight curls, it is a great tool to have in your kit for whenever you want to switch up your look or enhance your natural curl pattern. Oh, and at this price we think that it’s a total steal with its luxurious design and impressive results that stand up to curlers twice, and even thrice, its price point.

10. Drybar The 3-Day Bender Digital Curling Iron

Reasons to avoid
Drybar’s 3-Day Bender Curling Iron has finally crossed the pond and can now be snapped up at Harrods or LookFantastic. Instantly recognisable, this hot tool demands to be noticed with its popping yellow design that makes a nice change from the classic black and grey wands. Looks aside, this curling wand is a great all-rounder that boasts ionic technology to tame frizz, infrared technology to reduce damage and ceramic heaters to maintain even, steady heat.
In terms of usability, the wand, which rotates independently from the handle, comes with a clamp to hold the sections of hair in place. Both these features make curling hair a total breeze, significantly reducing styling time – although we will admit that the clamp takes a little getting used to. If your hair is long or thick, you’ll be pleased to know that this barrel is longer than most. And as for results, expect lots of body and bounce – even on fine hair.

Long hair? This curling wand from BaByliss is for you. Designed with an extra-long barrel, this tool was created with longer lengths in mind. Tapered in shape with ‘non-slip wrap control’, it’s really easy to use – simply wind the hair around the barrel (tilted downwards), hold in place for 5 seconds before releasing. Go for small sections if you want a tight curl – or take large sections for a looser look.
Note that this wand can get quite hot (maximum temperature is 210°C) so make sure you wear the heat resistant glove while styling strands. There are, however, five temperatures to choose from – so start low and move up if needed. To maintain healthy hair when heat styling, we recommend having heat-free days and applying one of the best hair masks on those days to nourish and repair hair. Overall we were really impressed with this curling wand, it delivers mermaid waves and at £32 – it’s a total steal.

For less of a curl and more of a wave, give Amika’s High Tide Deep Wave Hair Crimper a whirl. An award-winning, best-selling tool – this must-try ‘crimper’ delivers gorgeous, beachy (and most importantly, crease-free) waves in a matter of minutes. A total mane-changer, we were blown away by the results. Expect lots of volume, body and texture as well as natural mermaid waves that give you the perfect holiday hair.
Suitable for all hair types and lengths, this tool features three tourmaline ceramic barrels (measuring 18.5mm each) that hug large sections of hair to create a wave. Holding the tool horizontally, move it down the length of the hair, clamping and releasing as you go. Our top tip? Start a few inches down from your roots for a more natural-looking wave.
How we tested the best hair curler buys
To curate our edit of the best hair curler wands, tongs and waves, we tested dozens of top-rated tools, ranging in price point, barrel size and material. From large barrels to skinny wands, we made sure every type of curl style was covered. The tools featured here all scored highly on the following.
- Styling ability: We looked carefully at all the features each curling wand offered and crucially, whether or not they worked
- Ease of use: We might be used to curling, crimping and waving our hair but not everyone is, so we also made sure that every wand on this list was easy to use, even to complete beginners
- Curl hold: There's no point in going to the effort of using curling wands just for the curls to flatten out as soon as you leave the house - so we only included tools that genuinely held our curls
- Heat-up time: Every tool on our list heated up quickly and was ready for action shortly after switching on
FAQs
How to choose the best hair curler for you
Aside from your hair type, there are other things to consider before investing in a curling wand.
- Curling iron vs curling wand: A traditional curling iron features a barrel with a clamp function that creates long-lasting curls. Irons are versatile and can create classic tight spiral curls as well as loose waves. Most models are easy for beginners to master. A curling wand creates a more freeform, natural curl, and, because there's no clamp, has less risk of denting or ridging hair. Wands are great for S-shaped beach hair waves—some are without a cool tip so wearing a heat-resistant glove is key.
- Materials: Ceramic barrels help spread heat evenly, thus minimizing the risk of hot spots or singing. Tourmaline is best for frizzy hair, as it emits negative ions to smooth tresses and promote shine. Titanium is the strongest yet lightest natural metal, titanium curling irons are usually higher-end and durable enough for professional use. They heat up quickly and can distribute heat evenly.
- Heat: Heat protectant notwithstanding, applying direct heat to hair will always incur some level of damage—so with heat settings, it's always best to start low, around 149°C, particularly if your hair is fine, thinning, coloured, processed, or dry and damaged. The healthier and thicker the hair, the higher (and hotter) your hair can withstand, but it's best not to exceed 450°F to avoid damaging or burning your strands. And if you want to avoid heat damage altogether, you're probably best going with a heatless method such as dressing gown curls.
- Barrel size: The smaller the barrel, the tighter the curl. Smaller barrels (around 3/4") are also great for curling short hair. A 1" barrel gives a standard-width ringlet great for curly hairstyles across the board, while bigger barrels (1.5-2") are best for long hairstyles and those who want a softer, more volumed wave instead.
- Barrel shape: Curling irons now come in myriad shapes ranging from simple to spiral-, cone-, and bubble-shaped barrels. These are all meant to achieve a specific kind of curl on hair, with a cone or tapered wand giving more natural curls, and bubble and spiral shapes giving tighter, more distinct ringlets.
