Who's who in the extended Royal Family?

Members of the extended Royal Family have been observed coming together to pay solemn tribute and reflect upon the extraordinary life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II.

Following the announcement from Buckingham Palace on September 8 that Queen Elizabeth II had died at Balmoral Castle, King Charles expressed the “greatest sadness” at the loss of his beloved mother. The new King’s tribute has since been followed by those of other prominent royals, including Prince William and Princess Anne. On September 14 they were joined by many other Royal Family members in honoring Her Majesty as her coffin traveled from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall. 

King Charles, Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York and Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex walked solemnly behind her coffin throughout its journey. To learn more about the King and his siblings see our guide on the Queen’s children.

Many of Her Majesty’s male grandchildren also joined her children in walking behind Her Majesty's coffin, including Prince William, Prince Harry and Peter Phillips, whilst James, Viscount Severn, Lady Louise Windsor, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, Zara Tindall met them at Westminster Hall. The Queen was a proud great-grandmother to twelve royals - Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Savannah Phillips, Isla Phillips, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor, Mia Tindall, Lena Tindall, Lucas Tindall, August Brooksbank and Sienna Mapelli Mozzi.

Though so many of members of her immediate family were in attendance as Queen Elizabeth’s coffin made its journey to Westminster Hall, there were also other royals there that some people might not be as familiar with. David and Serena Armstrong-Jones, Earl and Countess of Snowdon

The Earl of Snowdon is the only son of Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon and the nephew of the late Queen Elizabeth II. He is a former Chairman of the auction house, Christie's, and married The Honorable Serena Stanhope in 1993. The couple are parents to Charles, Viscount Linley and Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones. The Earl joined the Queen's children and several of her grandchildren and walked in the procession as the monarch's coffin was brought to Westminster Hall.

Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones was born in 2002 and was a bridesmaid at Prince William and Catherine's wedding back in 2011. Her older brother, Charles, Viscount Linley, was born in 1999 and was previously appointed to be a Page of Honour to their late great-aunt, the Queen.

Lady Sarah Chatto

Lady Sarah Chatto is the only daughter of the 1st Earl of Snowdon and Princess Margaret, the Queen's late sister. She was a bridesmaid at the wedding of her cousin, the now-King Charles and the late Princess Diana in 1981. Lady Sarah is a professional painter and Vice President of the Royal Ballet. She has two children, Samuel and Arthur, with her husband David Chatto and the couple are said to have met whilst she was travelling in India. 

Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and the Duchess of Kent

Prince Edward, Duke of Kent was born in 1935 and is a first cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth. The Duke was President of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club for many decades before stepping down from this prestigious position in 2021. The Duke and Duchess of Kent have three children: George Windsor, Earl of St Andrews; Lord Nicholas Windsor and Lady Helen Taylor. The couple currently live in Wren House, in the grounds of Kensington Palace. The Duke of Kent was amongst the senior royals who joined Her Majesty on the balcony of Buckingham Palace during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations for Trooping the Color. 

George and Sylvana, Earl and Countess of St Andrews

Born in 1962, George Windsor, Earl of St Andrews is the eldest son of the Duke and Duchess of Kent. He married academic and historian Sylvana Tomaselli in 1988 and the couple have three children together - Edward Windsor, Lord Downpatrick, Lady Marina Windsor and Lady Amelia Windsor. The Countess of St Andrews is a Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge as well as an Affiliated Lecturer in the Faculty of History and Faculty of Human, Social and Political Sciences.

Lady Helen Taylor

The only daughter of the Duke of Kent, Lady Helen Taylor was previously a fashion ambassador for the brand, Giorgio Armani, for many years. Lady Helen and her husband Timothy Taylor have four children: Columbus, Cassius, Eloise and Estella. 

Lord and Lady Nicholas Windsor

The youngest child of the Duke of Kent, Lord Nicholas Windsor converted to Roman Catholicism in 2001 and upon his marriage to his wife Paola, now Lady Nicholas Windsor, is understood to have become the first member of the British Royal Family to get married in the Vatican for hundreds of years. He and Paola have three children together, Albert, Leopold and Louis. 

Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy

Princess Alexandra is the sister of the Duke of Kent and Prince Michael of Kent and one of Queen Elizabeth's first cousins. She is a working member of the Royal Family and is understood to be a Patron of over 100 organizations. Princess Alexandra is the widow of The Right Honorable Sir Angus Ogilvy, whom she married in 1963, and is also known as The Honorable Lady Ogilvy. She has two children, James Ogilvy and Marina Ogilvy, and four grandchildren - Flora, Alexander, Zenouska and Christian. 

Prince and Princess Michael of Kent

Prince Michael of Kent, born 1942, is the first cousin of Queen Elizabeth and grandson of King George V and Queen Mary, as well as the brother of the Duke of Kent. Prince Michael married Baroness Marie-Christine von Reibnitz - now Princess Michael of Kent - in 1978. The couple have two children, Lord Frederick Windsor and Lady Gabriella Windsor. Prince Michael of Kent joined the Duke of Kent and wider Royal Family paying tribute to Her Majesty as her coffin arrived at Westminster Hall to lie-in-state ahead of her funeral service. 

Lord and Lady Frederick Windsor

Lord Frederick Windsor is the only son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. Born in 1979, he is a financial analyst and in 2009, he married the actor, Sophie Winkleman, sister of Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia Winkleman. She is now styled as Lady Frederick Windsor, and the couple live together with their two daughters, Maud, nine, and Isabella, six. 

Lady Gabriella Kingston

Lady Gabriella Kingston (born Lady Gabriella Windsor) is the only daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, born in 1981. She is a graduate of Brown University and Oxford, and a freelance writer. In 2019, she married Thomas Kingston at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle in a ceremony attended by her father's cousin, Queen Elizabeth II. 

Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester and the Duchess of Gloucester

Born in 1944, Prince Richard is Duke of Gloucester and another of the late Queen's first cousins. In 1972 he married Danish-born Birgitte van Deurs Henrikson and the couple have three children, Alexander Windsor, Earl of Ulster, Lady Davina Windsor and Lady Rose Gilman. As full-time working members of the Royal Family, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester have been attended many important events and occasions over the years and are associated with a number of charities and organizations. 

The Earl and Countess of Ulster

Alexander Windsor, Earl of Ulster was born in 1974 and is the only son of the Duke of Gloucester. He is married to Claire Booth, who is a physician, and the couple have two children - Xan Windsor, Baron Culloden and Lady Cosima Windsor.

Lady Davina Windsor

Lady Davina Windsor, born 1977, is the elder daughter of the Duke of Gloucester. She and her former husband, New Zealander Gary Lewis, have a daughter, Senna Kowhai, born 2010 and a son, Tāne Mahuta, who was born on 25 May 2012. In 2022, Lady Davina Windsor joined many members of her wider family in attending a service of Thanksgiving for Queen Elizabeth during the Platinum Jubilee weekend.

Lady Rose Gilman

The younger daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Lady Rose Gilman was born in 1980. She has established a successful career in the film industry as an art assistant, and worked on some of the Harry Potter films. Lady Rose and her husband George Gilman have one daughter, Lyla, born in 2010, and a son Rufus, born in 2012.
