On style
It's lovely to wear something so glamorous for this shoot, particularly since I don't really get the chance to shop for clothes, and I don't usually spend money on labels. I buy a lot of things from Monsoon, which is near my daughter's school.
Sometimes I forget what age I am. I read in the paper that so and so is 48, and I think, “That's getting on a bit.” Then it hits me that I'm the same age. Everybody says 50 is the new 40 and, for me, that means it's never been easier for women to look better and feel healthier.
People tell me I look younger now than I did when I was presenting in the 80s, but I think I've just got a style that suits me better. The hair and make-up then was very ageing. I'm much more comfortable with how I look now, and I don't see the point in lying about my age.
On her family
It surprised me how well I took to motherhood. I was 35 when I had Rosie and I hadn't changed a nappy, or looked after a baby in my life. Getting pregnant wasn't something we had planned – or not planned – to do. But when I held her just after she was born she was exactly as I'd pictured her – a wee thing with a shock of black hair and massive eyes. She looked at me, very quiet, and then looked all around the room to see what was going on. And in that moment I thought, “Okay, now I get it…”
I would have loved another child, but, in June 2001, I had a miscarriage when I was ten weeks pregnant. Looking back, I did that stiff upper lip thing and went back to work too quickly. It wasn't until Christmas that year that I allowed myself to think about what had happened, and then the emotion hit.
It's difficult because you plan and then it's all taken away from you. And people forget it's the same for the man. Steve had hopes and dreams around the baby as well, it wasn't just me. After that, we decided to leave things to fate. If it happened naturally, then fine. But sadly it never did.
I couldn't do what I do without Steve. He's a real man's man, but at the same time he has no problem managing the domestic side of things when I'm not there. The whole place would collapse without him. One of his greatest strengths is that he's never minded my career taking the limelight. In the past, people have called him “Steve Kelly”, and he's just laughed it off. It takes a really well-adjusted and secure man to cope with that.
